This is a news article from September 28, 1905, talking about one of the first Scandinavian to settle in Wisconsin, Lars D. Reque. It was written by a local reporter in Milwaukee, WI. To fully understand this primary source you must need to know about the Scandinavian immigrants in America, and the hardships they faced. The intended audience for this source is the people living in Milwaukee and the surrounding areas. The author probably wouldn't have changed much had the audience changed. This article was written to inform people of the immigrants, because some people didn't know about them. The author's main idea appears to be "Very few people know about the hardships and challenges these people faced when they came to America in search of a better life." This source is fairly important, as it tells exactly what they had to do to make a living, through the words of the actual immigrant. The only thing I actually am unsure of this source is why was this article made when it was? What led the author to this immigrant?
When Lars D. Reque came to the US, he was traveling on a tiny ship that had made a difficult journey across a large ocean. He traveled to Chicago, penniless and tired, and was taken in by a friend. His first job was helping dig a canal under the blazing sun. His pay was very small, even for that time period. In his first winter, he became sick. He had to sleep in a crummy shack that often had snow in it. Then he had to brave the mines, filling his lungs with dust.

As you can see, the immigrants were often shocked that America could be this brutal. It may have been better than their homeland, but it wasn't as easy as they were told. They overcame many hardships just so they could make ends meat.
